Organic
Here at Jubilee Farm, all of our vegetables, herbs and flowers are "certified organic". We are certified by Vermont Organic Farmers (VOF),
the certifying body of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont. We follow all of the rules of VOF, file paperwork with them
every year, and are inspected yearly. For more information on NOFA-VT and rules for certification please click here.
The simple definition of organic farming means not using synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. But the practice and philosophy
are more complicated. We try to direct the power of living systems to regulate weeds, diseases and fertility on our farm.
For organic farmers, it all starts with the soil. We build rich, fertile, well-drained soil by treating it well and feeding
it with organic matter. We use compost, crop residues, and green manures to add organic matter to the soil. These additions
also build up populations of diverse soil microbes which live an infinity of lifestyles. They kill and eat one another,
secrete lots of different kinds of goo, and (hopefully) create a biological equilibrium that buffers the effects of pests
and diseases. These microbes also build up a fertility bank account that holds nutrients in the soil.
We practice crop rotation to break up weed and disease cycles on the farm. We plant pest-resistant varieties where possible.
We use animals in the farm system to eat insects, to turn the soil and control weeds, and to provide the benefits of manure.
Farming is an inherently humbling project and we continue to learn lessons about production and stewardship each season.
