At 100 Years Old
When we bought the farm the barn, in its one hundredth year, was on the verge of collapse. Although most of the posts and beams were in sound condition, the foundation and sills had failed and the ramp had slid nearly four feet off level. This fallen ramp was acting as a giant lever to split the barn into two halves: the front half which leaned perceptibly forward towards the road, and the back half which tilted toward the rear. The stress was so great that scarf joints in the principal purlins which support the rafters had completely separated and extra slates had been added to the roof to fill in daylight gaps. Before we bought Jubilee Farm we made a commitment to ourselves to save this beautiful landmark from decay. Luckily for us Liberty Head Post & Beam, one of the best timber framing companies in Vermont, is located just 2 miles up the road. When we hired them in 1995, the wonderful adventure of barn restoration began.
